An easy and comfortable way to travel all through Ireland is with the Irish Rail. Whether you're travelling just one city over or all over the country, it's affordable and a comfortable way to get around. Plan ahead and book online or simply buy a ticket right at the station last minute. Travelling doesn't get easier than this! Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the Irish countryside on your way to the next destination.
There are many train stations all over Ireland. Some of the cities you can travel to are: Belfast, Cork, Dublin, Galway, and Limerick. The signs and announcements both on the station and the train are in Gaelic and English. The train stations are quite accommodating. There usually is a public restroom, info center, and ticket booths. Most train stations have coffee shops and little kiosks where you can buy things to take to go. Extremely convenient in case you'd like any food, drinks, snacks, or entertainment for on the train. At the station taxis are readily available to take you to your next destination.
Travel tip: FREENOW is the Uber equivalent taxi service In Ireland. A simple and free app where you can request and pay for a taxi anywhere and anytime.
The trains are spacious, comfortable, and clean. All trains offer free Wi-Fi and there are power outlets to charge your devices. When you book online you can pick and reserve the cabin and seats of your choice and your name will show up on the display above your seat. Especially nice if you prefer a window seat or a seat with a table. No big deal if you don't reserve ahead though, when you get on the train simply pick any open seat.
On some of the longer Intercity train rides like from Dublin Heuston to Cork (approximately 2-hour ride), they may offer catering service. A cabin attendant will stop by with a cart and offer all kinds of snacks, sandwiches, coffee, soda, and other beverages including wine, whiskey, and beer. See the menu in photo gallery below. Super convenient and definitely adds to the comfortable travel experience!
Irish Rail also offers Railtours through Ireland. (currently temporarily suspended due to COVID-19) A carefree and sustainable way to see Ireland. They offer day trips and multiple-day tours. Check out all the great travel tours they offer here. If you're a big fan of the show Game of Thrones, they offer a 2-day tour to see Belfast and the sites where they filmed Game of Thrones. Or how about a day trip to visit Galway and The Aran Islands that includes a scenic flight? All great options for tourists and locals. Read more about things to do Galway in one of my previous posts.
Ireland is a beautiful country to explore and Irish Rail definitely is a great and easy way to travel around.
Until the next departure!
