In the middle of Amsterdam there's this cute little café where you can enjoy some of the best Dutch apple pie. Café Winkel 43 is located on the Noordermarkt square in the "Jordaan" district which is about a 10-minute walk from the Anne Frank House. The café is mostly known for its apple pie but they also serve great small appetizers, breakfast, and lunch. Check out their menu. They are open until late at night so it's also a nice place to grab a drink and enjoy some late-night snacks. A glass of wine paired with some Dutch cheese or bitterballen, anyone?
It's very small and cozy inside. If you've been to Amsterdam before you know that it is typical for all the businesses located in the centuries-old tall and skinny canal houses. Depending on how crowded it is, it may be a tight squeeze sometimes. Luckily they also have a large outdoor patio which is very popular - especially in the summer.
You can pre-order a whole apple pie to-go a day or so in advance if you prefer to enjoy the Café Winkel apple pie at your hotel or if you're local, at home. Check out the Winkel apple pie to-go info.
What makes an apple pie a Dutch apple pie?
A Dutch apple pie is made in a springform pan, usually contains raisins, has a lovely buttery thick outer crust, and a beautiful lattice pattern on top. Dutch apple pie, from The Netherlands, is often confused with the Dutch as in "Deutsch" (from Germany) like the Pennsylviana Dutch apple pie. What is the difference? German apple pie has a streusel crumble topping and no raisins. A great foodie fact btw!
Café Winkel 43 is a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with a big slice of apple pie. Don't forget to ask for a big dollop of the delicious whipped cream they make in-house. It's the perfect flavor combination.
** Experience Café Winkel at Home **
Have a taste of Café Winkel 43 at home by making a Dutch apple pie! My favorite way to make a Dutch apple pie is by using Koopman's apple pie mix. It makes making the crust super easy and gets the flavor just right!
Since it's not always easy to get the pie mix internationally, you could make it from scratch. I like this Dutch apple pie recipe from the Sunday Baker. Enjoy all the amazing smells while this pie bakes in the oven!
Until the next departure!
