Basilica of Saint Nicholas, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Updated: Feb 24, 2022

A popular spot in Amsterdam during the holiday season is the Basilica of Saint Nicholas (St Nicholas Church). It was built between 1884 and 1887 and is known for its beautiful neo-Renaissance and neo-Baroque style architecture. It is one of the most famous buildings of the Amsterdam skyline. The basilica may be wedged in between the tall skinny canal houses, but it is still super easy to find since it's right across the street from the Amsterdam Central train station.

The basilica is a beautiful work of art and as you walk around, you will be in awe of all the amazing details and finishes. The building has the classic three-aisled Latin cross floorplan. In the center there's a beautiful baroque style dome that is encircled by four levels of stained glass. There's also an enormous 19th-century Sauer Organ that's still in its original state. One of the few original Sauer Organ's left in the world. If you're a fan of historic buildings, art, and architecture, the St Nicholas Basilica is a must-visit in Amsterdam.

The basilica is open to the public and free to visit! Check out the Basilica of St Nicholas' website for more information on hours and services.
